Emergency Electrician — What It Is and When to Call

Emergency electrical work is the rapid-response branch of the electrical trade for faults that present an immediate safety or property-damage risk — burning smells from fixed wiring, sparking sockets, complete loss of power, exposed live conductors, repeated RCD trips that will not reset, and any situation where water has reached electrical components. The defining feature is risk: every hour an unsafe electrical fault goes unfixed compounds the fire and electrocution risk, and in many cases the failure progressively damages other circuits.

Call when: you smell burning near sockets or switches; you can see sparking or arcing; the consumer unit will not stay reset; an exposed wire is accessible to people, pets, or children; or water has come into contact with sockets, light fittings, or the fuse box. If anyone has had an electric shock, leave the building and dial 999 first — then call us once the property is safe.

What Counts as an Electrical Emergency

Six categories cover almost every emergency call we attend.

Burning Smell from Sockets or Switches

Overheating wiring or a loose connection generating heat. The smell often appears before any visible damage. Switch off the main breaker and call us immediately — this is one of the most common pre-fire warning signs.

    Sparking from Outlets or Appliances

Arcing between conductors that can ignite nearby material. Stop using the affected socket or appliance and isolate the circuit at the consumer unit until we attend.

    Complete Power Loss

Not a supply-side fault (street outage, mains issue) but a fault within your installation that has dropped the entire consumer unit. Common causes include main-switch failure, RCD failure, or a major short on a circuit.

    Exposed or Damaged Wiring

Any live conductor accessible to people or pets — usually following a DIY accident, building damage, or rodent damage. Make the area safe by isolating the circuit, then call us to make permanent repairs and re-certify.

Repeated RCD or Fuse Board Trip

An RCD that keeps tripping — or trips the moment you reset it — is signalling a fault somewhere on the circuit. Sometimes it is an appliance; sometimes it is the wiring itself. We diagnose by isolation testing and fix on the day.

    Water and Electrics Contact

Flooding, leaks, or burst pipes near sockets, light fittings, or the consumer unit. The risk is electrocution if you touch anything plugged into the water-affected circuit. Isolate at the main switch first, call us, do not touch anything wet.

What You Get When You Call ARI for an Electrical Emergency

Four outcomes that separate us from the average emergency-electrician search result.

    Make Safe Within the Hour

1–2 hour response across London and the M25. We isolate, contain, and stabilise the fault on the first visit even if the full repair lands the next day.

Part P Certificate on the Day

After emergency repairs we issue a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate (or EICR if appropriate) on the same day — proper documentation for your records, insurance, or landlord compliance. Not just a verbal "it is fixed".

    Multi-Trade in One Visit

If the electrical emergency has caused water damage, triggered a boiler fault, or affected plumbing, we handle the related trades in one visit. No calling three companies at midnight.

    Transparent Pricing Before Toolbox Opens

We confirm the cost on arrival, before any work starts. Out-of-hours premiums stated up-front and capped to a clear hourly rate.

How an ARI Emergency Electrical Call-Out Works — Five Steps

The same five-step process every emergency follows.

    01

    Call 07796 382957

Describe what is happening, where, and how bad. We give immediate damage-limitation advice (isolate at main breaker, stay clear of water and exposed wiring) while we are en route.

    02

    Confirm dispatch and ETA

Target arrival window in writing. Most emergencies reached in 1–2 hours during working hours; out-of-hours within 2 hours where roads are clear.

    03

    Arrive and diagnose

Full diagnostic on site — circuit testing, insulation testing, RCD trip analysis. Identify the cause before any work starts.

    04

    Make safe and fix

Most emergencies are resolved on the first visit. Common parts on the van. If specialist parts need ordering, we make the area safe and book the follow-up at no second call-out fee.

    05

    Certify and sign-off

Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate issued on the day. 12-month workmanship guarantee in writing.

Why London Property Owners Use ARI for Electrical Emergencies

According to Electrical Safety First, an estimated 1 in 6 UK fire-service callouts to dwelling fires has an electrical cause — with overheating fixed wiring, faulty consumer units, and DIY electrical work topping the causes. Calling a qualified, registered electrician fast (rather than letting the problem develop) is the single biggest determinant of whether an electrical fault becomes a fire.

Every electrician on our team is fully qualified and Part P registered. We carry public liability cover, issue certificates on every emergency repair, and rate 5.0 stars across 27 Google reviews and 9.94/10 across 32 Checkatrade reviews.

    About the Emergency Team

ARI Maintenance is led by Arianne ‘Ari’ Raofi, founder, who built the company in March 2025 to give London property owners one accountable team for every trade — including the 3am call-outs. Day-to-day emergency electrical response is handled by named, qualified Part P-registered electricians backed by Ari’s diagnostics.

“Most electrical emergencies are not dramatic in the moment — they smell faintly of burning. The fault has been developing for weeks. Our job is to find the loose connection or the failing component before it becomes the dramatic moment.”

What to Do While You Wait for the Emergency Electrician

Four steps that limit risk and damage between calling us and our arrival.

    1

    Turn off the main breaker

Go to your consumer unit (fuse board) and switch the main switch to OFF. This cuts power to the entire property — safer than trying to identify which circuit is at fault.

    2

    Do not touch anything wet

If water is near electrics, do not touch sockets, switches, or plugged-in appliances until the main switch is off. Even with the main off, wait for us to confirm safe before re-energising.

    3

Do not try to fix it yourself

Even if you have basic DIY experience, electrical faults are unforgiving. The job-of-the-day for the electrician is half repair and half explaining to the homeowner what they are looking at.

    4

Keep clear of any exposed wiring

Children and pets should be moved to a different room until we arrive. If a wire is dangling or hanging loose, do not touch it even if the main is off — back-feed from another circuit is rare but possible.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What counts as an electrical emergency?

Burning smells from sockets, sparking wires, complete power loss, exposed wiring, repeated RCD trips, water near electrics, and any situation where there is an immediate safety risk. If in doubt, call us and we will advise on the phone whether it needs an emergency visit or can wait for a standard appointment.

How much does an emergency electrician cost in London?

Emergency electrician rates range from a bespoke price–a bespoke price per hour with a one-hour minimum. ARI Maintenance is a bespoke price first hour in-hours, a bespoke price first hour out-of-hours. We give you a clear price before starting any work, even at 3am.

How quickly can you respond to an electrical emergency?

We aim for 1–2 hours across London and the M25 for genuine electrical emergencies. Call us and we will give you an estimated arrival time immediately, plus damage-limitation advice while we are en route.

Should I turn off my electricity if I smell burning?

Yes. Switch off the main breaker in your consumer unit immediately and call an electrician. Do not use any switches or sockets until the fault has been found and fixed. Burning smells often precede visible damage, so calling early prevents progression.

Can you issue an emergency electrical certificate?

Yes. After emergency repairs, we issue a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate or an EICR as appropriate, on the same day. You get proper documentation for your records, insurance, or landlord compliance.

What if I have had an electric shock?

Leave the property immediately. Dial 999 for medical assessment even if symptoms feel minor — electric shocks can cause delayed cardiac issues. Do not return to the property until the electrical fault has been made safe. Call us once the property is safe to assess.

    Are you Part P registered?

Yes. Every electrician on our team is fully qualified and Part P registered (NICEIC, NAPIT, or equivalent). All notifiable work is carried out to current 18th Edition wiring regulations and certificated.

Can you handle electrical emergencies in flats and apartment blocks?

Yes. We have experience with shared consumer-unit setups, communal landings, and managing access through building management for after-hours emergencies. We coordinate with managing agents directly where needed.
